I just finished watching “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”. It is the story of a boy entering in to a new season of his life – high school. It is a story about the human condition; the deep desire to be accepted, to matter to someone, and to find healing within those relationships. The movie highlights the relationships that profoundly changed the character’s life, both positively and negatively. The beauty of the movie lies in the breadth of relationships the character experienced and what that means to him. It reminded me of the relationships that have profoundly shaped who I am today. I remember a professor of mine challenging me to face myself, to be honest with who I am and accept the trials in life that helped shape me. Our greatest challenge in life is to face ourselves and yet it is the one thing that releases us to truly live. A line from the movie that struck me was: “We accept the love that we think we deserve!”
